Robert Trent Jones Jr. or Bobby was born on July 24, 1939 in Palo
Alto, California. He is the eldest son of golf course architect
legend named Robert Trent Jones Sr. Another brother of him, Rees
Jones, is also a respected golf course architect. That explains
why Bobby got a great start in the business.
After convincing his father to open a West Coat Office and spending
a decade working with him, Bobby, then, set out on his own in 1973.
He and his company, the Robert Trent Jones II Group, work very closely
with environmental and archaeological groups. He is recognized as
a thinking man’s designer, and has been called “the father of environmental
golf course designer”.
Robert Trent Jones Jr. has designed and built over 150 remarkable
golf courses around the world. Along the way he has befriended presidents
and prime ministers, represented the United States of America in
numerous human rights organization. He is also a winner in the cause
of environmentalism and public parks. As a result, his impressive
portfolio of golf designs throughout the world; for example, in
Asia, Australia, Europe and North America have been beautifully
accumulated. Robert Trent Jones Jr. has also authored a magnificent
and luxurious illustrated book on architecture called “Golf By Design”
which is very useful as an instructional aid for mapping out playing
strategy.

In addition, with Bobby’s suggestion, the
Robert Trent Jones II Group has created and supported a sophisticated
sense of place so that each golf course incorporates visual,
agronomic, and cultural themes from the immediate site, whether
a farm look, such as at University Ridge (1991) in Wisconsin;
native dunes grasses and contours as at the Links at Spanish
Bay (1987) in California or The National (1988) below Melbourne,
Australia; highlighting a massive mine pit as with The Mines
(1994) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia or Joondalup (1985) in Western
Australia; carving holes through Hawaiian lava fields at Waikoloa
Beach (1981); or going what Bobby calls “deep into the third
dimension” of a sheer mountain site, as at Sugarloaf GC (1986)
in Northern Maine (Klein 2003).
