Wat Suan Dok
Wat Suan Dok was built inB.E. 1914 (1371AD) during
King Guna's reign, the sixth king of Mengrai dynasty of Lanna. As
a religious man, King Guna asked the King of Sukhothai to send Pra
Maha Sumana, a famous buddhist monk to Lanna to teach and disseminate
Dharma to his people. After arriving in Lanna, Pra Maha Sumana was
accommodated at Wat Pra Yuen, in Lumpoon city, two Buddhist Lents
before being appointed the first supreme patriarch ofLanna. When the
King wanted to have a temple built for Pra Maha Sumana, he donated
his flower garden outside the western, Suan Dok, gate for the construction
site. At that time the garden was quite peaceful and an isolated place,
suitable for meditation practice, and Pra Maha Sumana was appointed
its first abbot.. The temple was originally named in Pali language
as Wat Bubbharam, meaning Wat Suan Dok Payom in Thai. However, its
popular name is Wat Suan Dok. |
